Disneyland and Universal Studios will always cited as top destinations for visitors to the greater Los Angeles area.
But there’s another destination that’s popular with RV enthusiasts: The Pomona Fairplex.
The event center, which is the site of the Los Angeles County Fair and one of the largest Fourth of July fireworks displays in Southern California, hosts major sports, business and entertainment events throughout the year. It also has its own campground, the Pomona Fairplex KOA, which features 185 campsites, two rental cabins as well as on site amenities, including a swimming pool, spa and exercise room. Tent sites are also available.
“People fly into Los Angeles, rent an RV and use us as a base camp for visiting onsite events at the Fairplex or to take tours,” said Vaughn Brotton, general manager of the KOA, adding that travelers from all of the major RV rental companies use the
campground, including El Monte RV, Cruise America and Jucy.
“We also have Hollywood tours that depart from our location every day. And we’ll have shuttles taking people to the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day,” he said.
Major upcoming events include:
— Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show, Apr 17, 2016
— LA on Tap (LA International Beer Competition & Festival), May 07, 2016
— Sancocho (Latin music, dance & food festival), Jun 04, 2016
— 52nd Annual L.A. Roadsters Show, June 18 - 19, www.laroadsters.com
— KABOOM! Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular, Jul 04, 2016
— The Los Angeles County Fair, Sept. 2 - 25.
With these and other events scheduled throughout the year, Brotton said the typical camper spends at least three days at the Los Angeles / Pomona / Fairplex KOA, including a day at the Fairplex, a day at the beach and another day at another Southern California attraction.
“Our business is continuing to grow,” Brotton said, adding that revenues and occupancies were up about 5 percent this year compared to 2014 figures. For more information, visit www.koa.com and www.fairplex.com.
