Dip a line in the Sacramento River, but get some advice first at The Fly Shop. Head west to Weaverville and visit California’s oldest continuously used Chinese temple at Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park. Choose from a varied and interesting menu at Weaverville’s celebrated La Grange Café.

At Willow Creek, 55 miles west of Weaverville, take a guided river trip or rent your own raft. Make the run west to Arcata, where you’ll find first-rate birding at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary. Unwind from the rigors of road travel in a private redwood hot tub at Arcata’s Finnish Country Sauna & Tubs.

The Route: From Redding, catch state 299 and follow nearly to the coast; take U.S. 101 south to Arcata.
