Marvel at the castle like natural stone turrets of Castle Crags State Park. In Dunsmuir, you can enjoy railroad memorabilia and a stroll through this mountain community. Majestic Mt. Shasta provides great downhill and cross-country skiing in winter and hiking in summer. At its base lies the quaint city of Mt. Shasta, with lodging and dining. Farther north, take a walking tour of preserved Victorian homes in Yreka's historic district, which is on the National Register. The Siskiyou County Courthouse in Yreka features a dazzling display of huge gold nuggets. See a miner's cabin and logging memorabilia at the Siskiyou County Museum.
To the west, the Klamath River teems with salmon-and anglers. Drive through pastoral Scott Valley, an agricultural center sheltered by the Trinity Alps and the Marble Mountains.
In the county's eastern side, explore desert plateaus, deep craters, and caves at Lava Beds National Monument. For views of migrating birds that will make your spirits soar, head to the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, north of the Lava Beds, and to the nearby Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge. At both refuges, you can view millions of water-fowl in their winter homes, including swans and snow geese. The Klamath Refuge shelters hundreds of bald eagles.
