In the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, Whiskeytown Lake is popular for sailing, waterskiing, and fishing. Rainbow and brook trout beckon at nearby Lewiston Lake. Stop at Shasta State Historic Park to see the remains of Gold Rush-era Shasta City, which include a courthouse museum, jail, and old-time general store.
Shasta Lake, with its sprawling, serpentine shoreline, is a hot spot for house boating, with the largest rental fleet in California. A tour of Lake Shasta Caverns includes a boat trip across the lake, Shasta Dam has a spillway with a drop three times higher than Niagara Falls. A vista point affords a spectacular view of the dam, the lake, and snowcapped Mt. Shasta in the distance.
McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park features a 129-foot-high waterfall that transports you to a tropical island. Enjoy boating, fishing, and swimming at Lake Britton below the falls. Head east to Big Lake and boat to secluded Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park to view lava fields, marshlands, and plentiful wildlife.
